ForestEthics seeking Climate Director

ForestEthics is currently seeking an energetic and creative Climate Director to lead our Climate Program in Canada. The successful applicant will oversee a passionate team of campaign, communications and outreach staff working on our Tar Sands and Sacred Headwaters campaigns and Climate Solutions work, with staff in Canada and the US.

As a key member of the ForestEthic’s senior management team, you will be part of leading
an exciting, results-driven organization with a strong track record. As an inspiring leader,
you will develop, implement and administer the Climate Program vision and plan; communicate your work to internal and external audiences; provide leadership and
manage staff; and build relationships with industry, businesses, allied organizations,
governments and key opinion leaders.

You will develop and implement strategic communication plans with our communications
team and act as the program’s media spokesperson when required. You will also be a
creative participant in the development of fundraising plans, including proposal
development, program reports, and updates for external funders.
We are seeking a talented individual who has a demonstrated track record as a change
agent.

ABOUT FORESTETHICS

Founded in 2000, ForestEthics is a nonprofit environmental organization with staff in Canada and the United States. Our mission is to protect Endangered Forests and wild places, wildlife, and
human wellbeing. We catalyze environmental leadership among industry, governments and
communities by running hard-hitting and highly effective campaigns that leverage public dialogue and pressure to achieve our goals. Our current campaigns focus on fighting climate change, protecting wild places in Canada, and on transforming industries that use products that come from these places. Our efforts have helped protect millions of hectares of forest and transformed the environmental practices of Fortune 500 companies including Dell, Staples, Office Depot, Victoria’s Secret, and many others.

POSITION SUMMARY

ForestEthics’ climate campaign focuses on mobilizing public opposition to the Tar Sands
to create pressure for reforming Canadian climate and energy policy. In 2010, the campaign will prioritize the Tar Sands, stopping the Gateway pipeline and developing
strong national climate policies. This position will be based in Vancouver, with the consideration for Toronto.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• At least eight years of relevant work experience such as environmental campaigning,
organizing, politics, advocacy or media, with demonstrated tangible results

• Working knowledge of climate change and energy issues

• Post Secondary degree preferred

• Excellent analytical and strategic thinking capabilities

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Excellent project management, time management and interpersonal skills

• Must be extremely well organized, able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, and work independently and as part of a team

• Comfortable working in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment

• Interest in and passion for the mission of ForestEthics

Wetland Naturalist Position - Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area

Wetland Naturalist

May 11 to September 4, 2010

Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area

Located south of Kootenay Lake in the Kootenay Rockies Region of southern British Columbia, the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area (CVWMA) is a magnificent 17,000 acre internationally designated Ramsar wetland. Students, active family groups, biologists, researchers and lay naturalists are some of our biggest client groups. To support the visitor experience and ensures that the memories and interest in wetland conservation remains with then long after their visit is over, our Interpretative Centre offers: educational exhibits; engaging curriculum-based school programs; canoe and walking tours; nature trail programming; a hands-on science lab; theatre space; and a Natural History gift shop. Each season we offer returning post secondary students the opportunity to train as Naturalists and join us in showcasing this special wetland place. Responsibilities

As a Naturalist with the CVWMA, you will be a member of a team dedicated to providing quality environmental education programs and front country excursions. You will interpret natural history; explain the purpose and management techniques of the CVWMA; conduct canoe, gallery, walking and bird watching tours; facilitate and lead school programs, develop and deliver interpretive programming; assist volunteers; prepare daily wildlife sighting reports; and perform key holder and maintenance duties.

Training

Naturalists receive training covering: CVWMA’s mission, history and conservation; wetland biodiversity and bird ecology; marsh management; interpretive strategies and educational values; and IBA/IMPARA status. Host and nursery to 286 species of birds, 57 species of mammals and 29 species of reptile, amphibians and fish, the opportunities to study, observe and showcase biotic communities, wildlife behaviors, and rare species are endless.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in and returning to a post-secondary training in fields such as: natural sciences, education, resource management, tourism, recreation, performing arts and marketing;
• Enthusiasm for learning and teaching about the natural world and a love of the outdoors;
• Creative, flexible and motivated with a strong work ethic, able to work in adverse weather;
• Experience working and interacting with the public in a courteous and energetic way;
• Experience working with children and youth in an engaging fashion;
• Experience or certification in outdoor recreation, bird-watching, canoeing, and backpacking;
• Valid first aid certificate and BC driver’s license;

Position Dates and Pay

Seasonal position from May 11 to September 4, 2010 (35 hour work week/schedules overlap weekends).

The wage is $13.00 per hour pending approval of funding.
