This site provides an educational perspective on the Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification (BEC) System in BC. The BEC system was developed by Dr. V.J. Krajina of the University of BC and has been adopted and expanded by the BC Ministry of Forests as a framework for managing ecosystems. Since the 1970’s, regional ecologists have continued to refine and develop the classification system. This site also contains links to: BEC Zone Education- covers the broad zone classification for BC and has interactive maps, slide shows, quiz features and 2 page Adobe handouts for each zone. There are also some interactive cross-sections for BC to test your knowledge of the distribution of BEC zones. BEC Site Classification Education- this site has tutorials on how to classify site series including summary info on soils, succession and plant ID. Included in this are practice scenarios for site classification with downloadable pdf files for site data. The scenarios currently focus on the Columbia region.
