Lesson Plans

New Online: Sinixt First Nation Notes

The 31 lesson plans developed to date have been broken down into three
sub-groups:

For tables which provide more information about each group of Lessons (lesson title, grades, and relevant PLOs), please click on the links above.

Each group of lessons covers some of the same basics (What is a Watershed?, Conservation, Pollution, Aboriginal culture), but lessons obviously become more sophisticated as the grades get higher. “What is a watershed?” is normally the first to be done within each group.

Making the most of the kits: Since kits are typically loaned out for several weeks at a time, their utilization is most efficient if you team up with other teachers in your school who teach the same grade grouping. The Lesson Tables show that the curriculum crosses a number of subjects, so there is often something applicable within the kit for everyone.

The Kit Resources page provides more information about the contents of the kits and ordering the optional items.

Each group of lessons is printed out in a binder which comes with the relevant kit of support resources. The lessons follow a similar format of:

  • Background – summary of why the topic is relevant
  • Materials – those resources from the kit needed as well as other, commonly available items
  • Vocabulary – list of terms that are important to the lesson
  • Engage – the start to the lesson which hooks the students’ minds
  • Explore – guided learning for the students
  • Consolidate – brings together the various elements introduced
  • Extension - optional, further activities or learning
  • Assessment – tools or suggestions for evaluating student learning and participation
  • Resources – list of primary sources for lesson development and further reading for teachers, including great online resources

Lesson Plan binders contain printed versions of the lessons as well as black line masters, overheads, CDs/DVDs and further background readings.

More to come: Over time, the current curriculum will be reviewed and updated as required. (Your feedback on the content will be greatly appreciated! see Feedback) The program will also expand to include more lessons concerning:

  • Climate Change and its effects on the Basin
  • Water quality and quantity issues and testing
  • Local/Community water issues within the Basin

Online Access: Updated lesson plans and additional information for them are starting to become available online. Follow the lesson plan links at top or click on Downloads for access to these.
